Review
The Desperation Band should not be unfamiliar to our readers. We've been trumpeting them for several years now. They consist of three worship leaders from New Life Church in Colorado Springs and, in my opinion, have written and produced some of the most consistently excellent worship music during this decade. One of the things that makes this band really work is the relationship of the three leaders; Jon Egan, Jared Anderson, and Glenn Packiam. Not only do they reflect an obvious strong relationship with (and passion for) Jesus, they really work well together. Album after album, I am amazed at the continuity of themes between the songs that each of them writes. The Holy Spirit weaves them together, and their hard work and perseverance pay off with well crafted songs that take the listener on a journey. This album opens with Jon's rousing "Freedom Song", bidding the journey to begin. As an opinionated aside, I find myself having had my fill of songs that are a rally cry for "this generation". I'm sure it's mostly because "this generation" is no longer "my generation" and I lament the passing of time. Perhaps some writers can help tie generations together (even though mine couldn't!).Glenn Packiam's "The Difference" continues to rock. He employs good use of a minor bridge, while coming back to a strong hook of "I am not the same". The only thing I wonder about is the carnival calliope break-down in the middle. It's different, but I don't know if it makes the song better. You won't find a more infectious, sing-able, pure fun song than Jared's "Promises". A 60's rock beat with audience response will have you singing along on the first listen.Track 4 begins to slow us down a bit. Anderson's "Ready Now" strikes a magnificent chord inside me. It's a song of repentance of our own self control, realizing that we need Him. In a great bit of writing, he sings "So take my hear and make it new, and make it true and make it like You. Take my hands, I lift them high. They're Yours not mine, to do what You will". It's a beautiful sentiment, and one that will resonate in hearts all over. The remainder of the album is no less noteworthy, but you'll have to get the album for yourself. I can't fail to mention my personal favorite, though. "Chasing", by Glenn Packiam, is an absolute masterpiece! "Every time I walk away, You are here waiting. And even when I turn my back, You are still saying 'You love me'... I will never stop chasing, I will never stop running after You". I've followed these guys since their independent days. All of their albums are must haves. I almost didn't like this one because I love their other stuff so much. I thought, this isn't as good as the other ones. That is the curse of all bands that have multiple albums. It just takes a few listens and the new one is as memorable as the others. You won't be disappointed with this one.Review by John Ausmus
